This equation we have here is what's called a one-step equation. In order to solve for y, we'll simply need to add 1 to each side.

WORK:
-1/2 = y - 1
y = 1/2

To get y, you must get y by itself.

First add 1 on both sides of the equation.

-1/2 = -0.5
-0.5 + 1 = 0.5

Adding 1 on y - 1, removes the '-1'

The answer is y = .5 or 1/2
