In New York country, Tammany Hall was the central organization of the Democratic Party. It was founded in 1789 as the benevolent "Tammany Society" and despite being infamously corrupt, it held sway in city and state politics for more than a hundred years. The party appealed to working class people because it tried to help poor people, especially the city's Irish immigrants.
