The lowlands among the highlands can be valleys, river valleys, plateaus... The valleys are at a low altitude, they are either flat or wavy. The river valleys are usually long but thin valleys created by the rivers that pass between the highlands. The plateaus are higher, and they are not really lowlands, but are lowlands compared with the mountains around them.
