If B is midpoint of AC, then AB = BC and AC = AB + BC = 2AB

AC = 8x - 20, AB = 3x - 1

substitute

8x - 20 = 2(3x - 1)

8x - 20 = 6x - 2 |+20

8x = 6x + 18 |-6x

2x = 18 |:2

x = 9

BC = 3x - 1 → BC = 3(9) - 1 = 27 - 1 = 26
