Well this election was right after the assassination of John F. Kennedy so that may have swung the vote.

Conservatives in 1964 supported racial inequality and segregation, as well as the war in Vietnam, which are both tragic parts of US history. Those are the main reasons why one should not vote for a conservative in the 60s.
