A chess club has 500 members but is losing 30 members each year. A computer lab has 130 members and is gaining 20 members per year. When will the two clubs have the same number of members?

Equations

y = 500 - 30x

y = 130 + 20x

The y values are the same

500 - 30x = 130 + 20x          add 30x to both sides.

500 = 130 + 20x + 30x

500 = 130 + 50x                   Subtract 130 from both sides.

500 - 130 = 50x

370 = 50 x                             Divide by 50

370/50 = x

x = 7.4                                     Answer.

For chess: year 8 will have 270 members. For computer lab: year 7 has 270 members.
