A separate confinement system was a penitentiary system developed in Pennsylvania in which each inmate was held in isolation from other inmates.
This penal method is based on the principle that solitary confinement fosters penitence or repentance and encourages reformation. This idea was advocated by the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons.
