How does the periodic table help us to predict unknown elements?

The periodic table is a systematic arrangement of the elements. They are arranged according to their atomic number, the number of protons (which in the case of atoms is also the number of electrons) of each atom.

If you compare the unknown element to the various groups and periods on the table, it is easy to find which group the unknown most closely resembles in chemical and physical properties.
