Solve this problem by writing and solving an equation of ratios:

17 2/5 mi            x

--------------- = -----------

0.75 gallon     1 gal

Cross multiplying produces the following equation:

(17 2/5)(mi-gal) = (0.75 gallon)x

Dividing both sides by 0.75 produces the desired quantity:

23.2miles  or 23 1/5 miles

This car can travel 23 1/5 miles on 1 gallon of gas.
