To  find the inverse of f(x) = -8x + 4,

1) replace "f(x)" with "Y:"    y = -8x + 4

2) interchange x and y:     x = -8y + 4

3) solve this result for y:    -8y = x - 4, or y = (x - 4)/(-8)

                                         -1

4) replace this "y" with  f       (x): ":

  -1             x - 4

f      (x) = - ----------

                      8
