Question:

[tex]-9(x-5)=72[/tex]

Solution:

[tex]-9x+45-45=72-45[/tex]   [Subtract 45 from each side]

[tex]-9x=27[/tex]

[tex]\frac{-9x}{-9}=\frac{27}{-9}[/tex]   [Divide by -9]

[tex]x=-3[/tex]

Answer:

[tex]x=-3[/tex]

Check:

[tex]-9[(-3)-5][/tex]

[tex]-9[-8][/tex]

[tex]72=72[/tex]
