Having slaves as ones primary source of labor is economically beneficial because the owner doesn't have to pay the slaves for their labor, which means that most of the profit gained from slave labor would go to the owner, making them extremely wealthy. While slavery is immoral and dehumanizing, it makes the people who own them very rich.
