after substitution :

-6y + 14+ 9y = 17

= 14 + 3y = 17

by subtracting 14 :

3y = 3

by dividing over 3 :

y = 1

after substitution:

x = 6 * 1 - 14 = 6 - 14 = -8

x = -8
