Spanish and French approaches to the American Revolution differed slightly in the American Revolution in that Spain did not decide to intervene until 1779 when France joined the war effort in 1778. Both countries gave aid secretly to the colonists prior to their declarations of war. Also the Spanish sought to regain territorial losses that it had give up during the Seven Years' War against Britain previously.
