What time period are you referring to ?
If 1450-1750 then you could reference religion (such as Islam) to show how it was diffused by trade in the Indian Ocean (Sufi mystics, merchants, etc) . For economic, you could say it facilitated greater trade with Portuguese and Spanish empires.
