If we all originated from Africa, why aren't we all called African Americans???

I think because we became independent. Like we didn't stay connected with each other and became different in many ways. Its like saying "Why do fish have different names (godlfish, bass, salmon, etc) instead of just called a fish" . I hope that's helpful :)
