Lyle bought 3/8 pound of red grapes and 5/12 of green grapes. How many pounds of grapes did he buy ?

He bought 19/24 pounds of grapes.
You need to find the common denominators then add.

3/8 = 9/24 - Red grapes
5/12 = 10/24 - Green grapes

10/24 + 9/24 = 19/24.
Therefore, he bought 19/24 pounds of grapes.
