Gifted students tend to often look for patterns in the question, and look for shortcuts that are true. Once they find them, usually they can replace the numbers and test it.

Also, most average students don't show a tendency to go and explore the various methods available to them, and stick to one. Gifted students search for countless ways to answer and probably check their work.
