Poverty refers to a state when someone cannot satisfy their basic needs that is someone who lacks a usual or socially acceptable amount of money or material possessions.

- Rural poverty.
Sociologist Herbert Gans gave functions of poverty as

- Because the poor are required to work at low wages, they subsidize a variety of economic activities that benefit the affluent,
