Only recently has life expectancy been increased beyond old age. Because the benefits of evolutionary selection diminish with age, there is less genetic material, mechanisms, and manifestations
This is despite the fact that cultural opportunities are particularly important for older persons in order to compensate for biologically driven declines in functioning.
Furthermore, because of limited resources, older persons may make less use of supporting environmental factors. As a result of these causes, the balance of growth and decline becomes less favourable as one gets older.
