In Boston, these measures caused people to begin to riot. In response, British troops were ordered away from their frontier posts and into Boston. On March 5, 1770, violence erupted on the Boston Commons. An unruly mob confronted British troops. The nervous troops were prodded and insulted. At last, the troops fired on the crowd, killing five men. This event is now known as the Boston Massacre.
