I believe the theme would be humor. The author is trying to say that the plants can sustain human life but can intelligent life sustain the planet. (its questioning intelligent life taking care of the planet.
So the theme may be, that our earth is good to some of our people but to some people it might not be. What the author is trying to say is " respect the earth and treat it nicely"
