The answer is -24. You can check by substituting.

You can simplify the equation to 1/3x + 8 = 1/6x + 4.

1/3(-24) + 8 = -8 + 8 which is 0.

1/6(-24) + 4 = -4 + 4 which is 0.

0 = 0 is a true statement.
