First yoy should read what ever your editing aloud and mark any mistakes or errors that you find along the way.

-check that everything flows nicely
-if you are writing about a topic, make sure that you stayed on topic and that you answered the question,
-you can change word choice, spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. 

There are a lot of things that you can change in a first draft so it's really up to you.
