2) Northerners were forced to help catch runaway slaves, and were fined if they were caught helping slaves. (fugitive slave act)
3) California was allowed to become a free state as was Utah. Boundary disputes were settled between Texas and New Mexico (Compromise of 1850) Below 36:30 slavery was allowed. Above that line slavery was forbidden
