a²-b²=(a-b)(a+b)

so
[tex]\frac{x^2-y^2}{x-y}=\frac{(x-y)(x+y)}{x-y}=(\frac{x+y}{1})(\frac{x-y}{x-y})=(x+y)(1)=x+y[/tex]
