Explain why modern communications systems are important to scientist worldwide

Science is an enterprise too big for one person: one person would not live long enough to discover "everything". Science can only advance if people benefit from others' work and advance it further: especially now that so much has already been discovered it is important to communicate with other scientists (so that one can use use and advance their results). This is what communication achieves.
