The New England colonies were led very strict Puritan lifestyles. They lived close by to each other, and everyone knew each other, where as in the Southern colonies, everyone lived far apart. Additionally, Town Hall meetings were held, and was closer to a direct democracy, I believe. Also there was a lot of shipping and port industry in the New England colonies, and forest industry with lumber, and fishing.
