The Germanic group that took control of the Italian peninsula after the end of the classical Roman empire was the Vandals. The vandals were an East Germanic tribe or group of tribes, that first appeared in history as inhabiting present-day southern Poland, but later moved around Europe, successively establishing kingdoms in Spain and in North Africa in the 5th century.
