Let the number be x.

[2(x + 5) - 6 ] ÷ 2 = 8
[2x + 10 - 6 ] ÷ 2 = 8
[2x + 4] ÷ 2 = 8
x + 2 = 8
x = 8 - 2
x = 6

Answer: The number is 6.
