Maybe you asked this on the wrong section, but anyways I'll help you.

Some plantation owners punished enslaved persons when they tried to escape, the enslaved people wanted to escape because they where treated so badly, so they wanted freedom. The "owners" of them didn't want that to happen so they punished them in a very bad way.
