The Byzantine Empire lied on the trade route from Asia to Europe: all the land trade from Asia, such as Indian spices and Chinese silk would travel to Europe trough the Byzantine Empire. This means not only that they had a prime access to the new goods, but they could also make money by providing the merchants place to sleep and eat.
