I am pretty sure it is inflammation.  The purpose of inflammation is 1) LIMIT THE SPREAD OF INFECTION/DAMAGE WITHIN A TISSUE OR REGION

2)PROMOTE REPAIR AND HEALING.

3) REMOVE DEAD OR DAMAGED TISSUE
