Prior to 1660, England governed its colonies minimally and the colonies were self governed. However, after 1660, the English monarchy was restored and became more involved in the colonies government. This process of restoration was very diplomatic. The English were able to wedge their control into the colonies and also became allies with the Native Americans to fight with other nations.
