The Dutch, the French, the Spanish, and the British were the main European powers which explored the new world. The first permanent British settlement was in Jamestown Virginia. The Spanish spent their time looking for gold along the Caribbean. The French settled in Quebec while the Dutch spent their time trying to claim British land EX: New Amsterdam.
