SOLUTION:

Let the unknown number = x

2 ( x + 1 ) = 4x - 6

2x + 2 = 4x - 6

2x - 4x = - 6 - 2

- 2x = - 8

x = - 8 / - 2

x = 8 / 2

x = 4

Therefore, the unknown number is 4.
