If you draw the line and mark -2 and 3 you find that they are 5 apart. By calculation, subtract the lowest from the highest: 3 - -2 = 3+2 = 5

the distance between -2 and 0 is 2 units

the distance between 0 and 3 is 3 units

2+3 = 5


OR

3- (-2) =

3+2 = 5
