Franklin D Roosevelt was important because redefined the role of the federal government in the lives of Americans. He also led the United States from isolationism to victory over Nazi Germany and its allies in World War II. He promised a "new deal" and he certainly delivered.  FDR was elected in 1932 to fight the Depression.
