What would happen to a bacterial cell if its protective covering was destroyed?

When the outer protective covering of a bacterial cell gets destroyed, then the bacterial cell will get effected by the harmful chemical that are present in nature. The bacterial cell will most likely get killed without the protective covering. I hope the answer comes to your help.
