Answer:

The independant variable is the variable that isn't effected by anything but rather affects the other variable. If I want to see how the light color will change the growth of a plant, the independant variable is the light color. It affects the growth of a plant, (which also varies but is effected but it doesn't affect anything) but the light color itself isn't effected by anything.
