Herbert Spencer used the concept of Social Darwinism to defend his opposition against increased state involvement and control in the economy and in citizens' lives. He saw competition and Social Darwinism as things that would make those involved in competition, especially companies and firms, stronger and benefit the country at large. As such, he saw large scale social aid, government regulation, etc. as merely being obstructions to the general improvement of society.
