I'm not sure what it's called, but they do this for the soil's nutrients. Corn sucks a ton of nutrients out of the soil but leaves very little when it decomposes. Whereas bean do the exact opposite. A farmer might grow beans for 2 years, than corn for one in the same field to counter this. I know that doesn't answer the question but I hope it helps.
