When cells become too large their sa to v ratio decreases which means it takes them a long time to get nutrients in and waste out so they often die. The small cell has the greatest sa to v ratio which also means they have the best chance for survival as they are more efficient with transport. To increase their sa to v ratio they can develop folds in their membrane like villi.
