Animals belonging to phylum Chordata are fundamentally characterized by the presence of a notochord, a dorsalhollow nerve cord and paired pharyngeal gill slits. These are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic, and coelomate with organ-system level of organization. This is known as Chordata.
