x=2+3y

x+y=14

plug x into the second equation

(2+3y)+y=14

multiply and all that fancy stuff

2+3y+y=14

2+4y=14

14-2=12

4y=12

12/4=3

14-y=x (because that's how you'd find x if x+y=14)

14-3=x
