How do I simplify 3(x-4)-5(z+2x) ?
I have it down to 3x-(-12)-5z+2x because I multiplied the first set of parenthesis by 3 and the second set by -5. The answer is -7x-5z-12 but how do I get there?

You first step was wrong. This is the correct procedure…

3(x - 4) - 5(z + 2x)

3x - 12 - 5z - 10x

From here, combine like terms.

-7x - 5z -12
