f(x) is a fancy way of saying y. So for now I will refer to y.

f(x)

y=3x+2+7x

g(x)

y=2x2-x-1

3x+2+7x+(2x2)-x-1 = f(x)+g(x)

Now lets add

10x+2+4-x-1=f(x)+g(x)

9x+5=f(x)+g(x)
