Seljuk Turks did not do well in first mainly Crusade because of fragmentation of principals, or city rulers. But they were very affective in second and third crusades by eliminating crusade army greatly in Anatolia, which was mainly controlled by Seljuk Turks. Actually after third crusade, Crusaders decided that going to holy lands through Turkish territory was very costly, so they chose sea-transit afterwards:)
