If the sponge if full of water the water will not fall because it’s absorbed into the sponge until it’s squished or flattened.
Some of the water inside of the sponge will spill. The reason is the same way it easily takes in the water, it easily put out the water. Think of it as if you drop mud on the ground. some will come out of your clump, the same as you can put it back in.
