Id say memorials are a collective pieces of remembrance towards events or people from the past which have caused impacts on modern day life. Other meaningful ways of recognising September 11 could be as simple as a pin/badge, certain colours to commemorate the day, flowers that represent it or even just a moment of silence maybe even to have that day as a day off from schools and some work places in honour of those who were lost on that day
